THERAPEUTIC RECREATION COORDINATOR

MISSION: Working under the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute of TeletonUSA Rehabilitation Program, the Recreational Therapy Coordinator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating recreational therapy services, which involves defining and implementing treatment goals as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The Recreational Therapy Coordinator will provide continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients under the direction of the Director of Rehabilitation Services. Responsibilities also include management and growth of the Buddy Program and additional programs within the department.

1. POSITION STATEMENTS:

Assist the medical team by providing recreational therapy services aimed at developing and improving each child’s independence, skills of daily living, overall health, social development, interpersonal relationships, and inclusion in their communities.

Provide services to develop and improve community integration necessary of children with disabilities and promote inclusion into society.

Provide recreational therapy activities using a variety of techniques. These may include, but not limited to arts and crafts, sports, games, dance, drama, music, aquatics and community outings, in an effort to improve and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the children served, with the goal of promoting inclusion into society.

Collaborate with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, physicians, administration, maintenance personnel, team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing guidance and services in compliance with established guidelines.

Manage and grow the Buddy Program to promote inclusion of children into the community ensuring that safety is maintained in all operations. This includes growing the volunteer base, developing relationships with community partners to host and participate in events, and the tracking of data and outcomes related to children’s participation in the Buddy Program.

2. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide prescribed recreational therapy services to children.

Assesses children served to interpret strengths and weaknesses in the areas of leisure skills, socialization skills, cognitive abilities, motor development and physical condition.

Lead Recreational Therapy groups and special events, both in-house and offsite.

Achieve quality care in medical practice through the application of the latest knowledge in recreational therapy within the standards and ethical principles of medical science.

Participate in assessment meetings and clinical sessions for eligible children for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/children/staff.

Work in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary support teams to provide community based treatment plans for children with disabilities and their families.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

A. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Knowledgeable of pediatric recreational therapy.

Care of children with neurological, muscular and skeletal disabilities.

Ability to teach and motivate children and adolescents.

C.REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

Must have Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Recreational Therapy, or other human services field required.

Two years prior experience with children preferred.

Must have CPR license.

Current licensure or in process of obtaining a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

D. GENERAL INFORMATION:

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
This position has a varied schedule to include some evenings and weekends.
